Loja da Lenha (the Old Wood Store) is one of three charmingly restored air conditioned gems that sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquillity is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel.
Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor's accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment. The large swimming pool is shared with the owner and their family (for a few days of the year this may include family children).
The front patio is shaded by vines and a shared seating area, surrounded by banana trees, has 4 chairs, table & sun umbrella, the perfect place for some light reading or for enjoying an evening drink. Loja da Lenha has comfortable ground floor accommodation for 2 guests.
The entrance opens into a well-furnished living room which features original chestnut beams, one stone wall and a coffee table locally crafted from beams used in the Quinta. There is a sofa, 2 armchairs, TV with over 600 cable channels, including German satellite channels, broadband access and table lamps for reading. Beyond, the kitchen/diner has table/chairs for 4, an electric hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, toaster, and kettle and plenty of serving/cooking equipment. The bedroom can be made up with 1 large double or 2 single beds & has mahogany chest of drawers with mirror above. The en suite bathroom has a bath with shower, bidet, basin, toilet and double fitted wardrobe (with small safe).
Linen, bath & pool towels and weekly cleaning are provided. There is a shared separate laundry room with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board available for guests' use.
These villas in Funchal are adult only and do not accept
children. The swimming pool may be used between 09:00 and 17:00.
Free Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth speaker are available for guests'
use.
Alhtough the bedrooms and living area are air conditioned, an
electric fan is provided in summer and a portable electric heater
provided in winter months.
The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house (currently occupied by the owners) was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote "Leaves from a Madeira Garden" about his garden and the island.
Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages
are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British
Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy
beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all
set in an area of about 40.000 square meters. Just down the street
you have the two most prestigious hotels on the island, Belmond
Reid's Palace, and the Savoy Palace. There are no other villas
in Madeira that offer this mix of tranquil character and traditon
with a central sought after location.
Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of
restaurants, cafés, bars, and small supermarkets. You can enjoy sea
swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just
want to walk along the coast in this area. Funchal town centre is
only a 20 minute leisurely stroll away (less than 2
kilometres).
Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but
advisable to explore this beautiful island.

The cottages are adult only and children under 18 are not
permitted. Maximum occupancy in each cottage is 2 people.
The advertised prices are based on a 2-person occupancy and
supplements apply should additional people join you for any length
of time.
To secure your reservation, a deposit of 100€ is required, or the
full amount if within 8 weeks or arrival. Should you cancel up to 8
weeks prior to arrival only the deposit is non-refundable, and
within this period the full amount.
Final details for check-in and driving instructions to the
property will be sent 7 days prior to arrival. A contact number
will be provided, and to be able to access the property, you need
to phone this number as you are leaving the airport. It is your
responsibility to contact and advise the number provided on the
check-in details to advise any delays to the expected check-in
time.
Check-in times - at the property - are between 16H00 and 19H00.
For out of hours check-in, alternative arrangements will be made
and an additional cost will apply.
Check-in and check-out flexibility will be applied where possible,
but this will depend on housekeeping schedules and the departure
and arrival days of other reservations either side of your stay; a
definitive answer can only be provided within 24 hours of your
arrival for check-in and your departure for check-out.

Reviews
As many have said, an oasis in the built up area of West Funchal. Remarkably quiet considering there's a busy road just outside. A short walk into the old part of the city and close to bus stops for anyone using public transport to get around. Very spacious rooms and a really well equipped kitchen for anyone planning on self catering and there's a big Pingo Doce supermarket 15 mins away. Some lovely restaurants on the way there if you are staying close to home. The well maintained pool is a real pleasure to come home to each afternoon after exploring the many diverse gardens of the island. Having an evening flight it was so lovely to have a late checkout and not drag bags around town.
A very pleasant stay. Wonderful host and very welcoming staff. Plantation and vineyard setting was a very nice change of pace. Close to restaurants and to the ocean. Public transportation easily accessible. Keep up the good work.
A great stay in this perfect oasis on a finca just up from the lido area. The apartment is comfy and in a peaceful location. Loved having use of the pool after a day out walking. Buffy is a helpful host, sharing the bananas grown on site and ideas for trips etc. I recommend a stay in this accommodation.
Un gîte très sympa et très propre, très bien situé à Funchal d'où on peut explorer toute l'île facilement. La piscine est très agréables après une excursion dans les montages ou juste pour se détendre. Les propriétaires sont très gentils, accueillant et de bon conseils tout en restant discrets. Très bonne adresse que nous adresse que nous recommandons sans hésiter.

Well located between Funchal centre and the hotel district. Benefits are: easy pick up for tour operators. Lots of restaurant choices in walking distance, and small supermarkets. Pictures very representative of the property. Enjoyed the pool area and the shade afforded by vines. Owners very welcoming and helpful eg. booking a taxi to and from airport and flexibility with check out. There is traffic noise when windows are open but property is well set back from the road and remains cool. The property is very secluded amongst vines and banana trees. Good choice of books in the property.
É um lugar onde nos sentimos no meio rural tradicional da Madeira, mesmo no centro do Funchal. recomendo vivamente para quem quiser passar umas férias na Madeira.

Wohnen in einer kleinen Bananen-Plantage (Quinta Stanford) und doch in der Stadt. In einem von Mauern umgeben herrschaftlichen Anwesen mit alter Villa wohnt man separat in einem Nebengebäude (Cottage) in einer großzügigen Wohnung mit eigener Zufahrt. (etwas schmales Tor von der Strassenseite, vorsichtig einfahren). Es gibt einen schönen Swimmingpool und Sitzgruppen direkt an den Banannenstauden. Die Wohnung ist sehr gemütlich eingerichtet und hat eine optimal ausgestattete große Küche (incl. Mikrowelle, Backofen, etc.). Auch Wachmaschine und Trocker stehen (nebenan) zur Verfügung. Die Besitzerin (Buffy) des Anwesens hatte uns sehr freundlich empfangen und konnte gute Tips geben. Wir haben selten so gut gewohnt. Absolut empfehlenswert.
Location est propre, très confortable avec un coin piscine convivial. Les propriétaires sont pleins de bonnes intention et tiennent à préserver notre intimité et à répondre à toutes nos attentes. Une location à recommander!
Séjour très satisfaisant. Proche du centre ville de FUNCHAL. Magnifique endroit entouré d'une bananeraie. Propriétaire très sympathique et parlant un peu le français. Nous y retournerons très certainement avec un très grand plaisir.

We enjoy the quiet and privacy of Loja de Lena and have stayed there several times. It is set in a beautiful plantation near to the main manor house. 25 min walk into the centre of Funchal or a few minutes by bus. About a 10 minute walk from the unmissable Reid's Hotel ! There is a lovely swimming pool/ sitting area. The property is well equipped, comfortable and attractive. The king sized bed is firm and very comfortable. There are two other gite type properties adjoining. We have always found our neighbours to be quiet and courteous. The owners live in the main house and are warm and helpful. So if you want a quiet relaxing environment in beautiful grounds and within walking distance of Funchal old town and plenty of good eateries........ .
Wir haben den Aufenthalt in dieser Unterkunft sehr genossen. Schöner kann man eigentlich gar nicht wohnen. Es war gemütlich, großzügig, toll eingerichtet und es hat an nichts gefehlt. Die ganze Anlage war toll mit Bananenplantage, super schöner Poolanlage die wir die ganze Woche allein genutzt haben.Die Vermieterin war sehr nett und jederzeit erreichbar. Supermärkte, Bäcker etc. waren in unmittelbarer Nähe. Der Hafen ist ca. 20 Minuten fußläufig erreichbar. Alles machbar, man ist auf ein Auto nicht unbedingt angewiesen. Wir können diese Unterkunft nur wärmstens weiter empfehlen.
Die Kommentare zur Unterkunft "Loja de Lenha" können wir nur bestätigen, es ist nichts hinzuzufügen. Es ist eine Idylle inmitten der interessanten und lebendigen Hauptstadt, in der man sich sofort wohl fühlt. Unser Urlaub war eine wunderbare Kombination aus Erkunden der Insel, Wandern, Bummeln in Funchal, Essen in netten Restaurants ... - und Entspannen in unserem wunderbaren Quartier. Hier konnte man so richtig "die Seele baumeln lassen". Danke an Buffy und Frank für ihre freundliche Aufnahme, viele Tipps und interessante Gespräche!
A little bit of old Funchal within easy reach of the town centre and close to restaurants and bars. We loved Loja da Lenha and are recommending it to our friends. The accommodation is extremely well appointed, very comfortable, and it's on a banana farm --- perfect.
