This Side Of Paradise - Check-in and Driving Instructions

Please print these driving instructions and have them with you when you arrive in Madeira.

If you have a car and are driving to your villa or apartment, please follow these instructions. Using GPS will take you via old and less easy roads and unusual locations:

  • Leaving the airport, take the motorway (Via Rápida) West in the direction of Funchal and after this to Ribeira Brava. Travel for 34. Km.

Airport Ribeira Brava

  • When you reach the end of the motorway (approximately 35 minutes) keep on the right hand lane and follow the signs to Ribeira Brava - Ponta do Sol.
  • The slip road will lead you to a roundabout. Take the first exit to Ribeira Brava and drive towards the sea for 1.4 km. You will reach another roundabout. Take the 1st exit into the tunnel, and you will now carry on for 3.9 km until you reach the roundabout of Ponta do Sol.
Calheta 1
  • At the end of the tunnel, you will reach another roundabout; take the 2nd exit, signposted Ponta do Sol and drive through another tunnel. At the end, carry on along the coastal road, and you will enter another tunnel. At the end, carry on along the coastal road, and you will enter another tunnel.
Calheta 2
  • At the end of this tunnel, you will come to the roundabout of Ponta do Sol; on the left, you will find a petrol station and a mini market. Take the 2nd exit into the next tunnel and drive for 2,8Km.
  • At the end of the tunnel, at the roundabout, turn sharply right into the next tunnel (signposted Calheta).
  • At the roundabout (1.6 km), take the first turn-off, signposted to Calheta, and drive through the next tunnel for 1.8 km.
Calheta 3
  • Reaching the next roundabout, take the first exit following signs to Arco da Calheta and drive up 100metres until you reach another roundabout. 

Calheta 4

  •   At the roundabout, take the 1st exit signposted with "Farmacia" (Pharmacy).  Follow the road up for approximately 2 kilometres until you come to a T-Junction and turn left, following the signpost "Farmácia".
  • Continue for approximately 600m, passing the chemist on your right. Take the next right-hand turn into Rua da Achada de Santo Antão.
  • Continue for 1.5 km and take the 5th road on your left (the turning is not obvious, so please pay careful attention not to miss this small road) - Caminho Poço do Lombo, which is a narrow, steep road and follow this for a further 200 m, which will curve to the left when you reach the top.
